August 19, 1815

NILES' WEEKLY REGISTER, Baltimore, August 19, 1815  Certainly the prime  content in this issue is a French version of the Battle of Waterloo. An inside page has a dispatch from the Duke of Wellington which recaps some of the events of the war and the follow-up movements. This is followed by a report from the French on the historic battle, which was a significant defeat for Napoleon Buonaparte. This report carries on to take over a full page. But it includes with an optimistic note: "...This, after ending the battle & repairing the errors of the day, with an assurance of the greatest success on the morrow...".
The back page has a curious item on: "General Jackson, being a report from New Orleans that: "...inform you the hero of New Orleans is no more--he was challenged by col. Benton but refused to fight him; and Benton afterwards met him & shot him in the street..." but there is a postscript noting: "The editor has reason to believe that the above statement is not correct." This is followed by another report refuting the information.
Complete in 16 pages, 6 1/4 by 9 3/4 inches, good condition.
