January 31, 1804

THE BALANCE & COLUMBIAN REPOSITORY, Hudson, New York, Jan. 31, 1804  Inside has half a page taken up with the report of the formal surrender of New Orleans & the Louisiana territory by France to the United States beginning with a letter dated New Orleans, Dec. 20 reading: "I have the pleasure to inform you, that on this day the city of New Orleans and its dependencies were amicably surrendered to the United States..." signed by Wm. C.C. Claiborne, governor of the Mississippi Territory. This is followed by the formal Proclamation signed by Claiborne noting this historic event (see).
Eight pages, 8 3/4 by 11 inches, very nice condition.
