Cook's voyage to the South Seas, with the rare Polynesian plate present...
Item # 640289 THE UNIVERSAL MAGAZINE, (London), September, 1784
* Captain James Cook
* South Seas w/ print
This magazine--much more scarce than the Gentleman's Magazine--published in serial form the account of: "Captain Cook's Voyage to the Northern Hemisphere...", this issue containing reports from November, 1777 thru February, 1778 when in the South Seas. As noted in "The Content" at the top of the first page, subheads include: "Arrival at Ulietea--Desertion from the Ships--Conspiracy to Seize the Captains Cook and Clerke--Christmas Island and the Sandwich Islands Discovered--Intercourse with the Natives of Atooi [Polynesia]" and much more (see), with the very detailed text taking 10 pages.
Of significance is that the rare full page plate is still present, showing: "A Morai, In Atooi." which is burial place (see). This plate is in very nice condition.
This issue also has a full page plate of: "William V, Prince of Orange", with text on him.
Contains 56 pages. As was typical with the Universal Magazine, it had no full title/contents page but rather an outer wrapper which served that purpose, but the wrappers were typically removed when the issues were bound. The title & date are printed at the top of page 1 (see). Measures 5 1/4 by 8 1/4 inches, good condition.
