November 28, 1919

THE NEW YORK TIMES, November 28, 1919  According to the New York Times Index this is the earliest mention of legendary Yankee baseball standout Lou Gehrig in this venerable newspaper, and it is for football no less. But this would not be surprising as he would go to Columbia University two years later on a football scholarship.
The report appears on page 17 at the bottom of a column-long article of local high school football news with a report on the game between De Witt Clinton and Commerce which includes a list of "Substitutions"at the bottom noting for Commerce: "...Wiedman for Gehrig..." in the fullback position (see photos). Keep in mind that Lou Gehrig was just 16 years old at the time.
Although a very inconspicuous listing this is a very significant newspaper for any Lou Gehrig fan as it is very likely the earliest mention of him in any newspaper in the country.
Complete in 28 pages, 15 1/2 by 21 inches, a few small margin tears and some light browning, but otherwise in nice condition.
