WESTERN SENTINEL, Winston, North Carolina, April 17, 1863

* Rare Confederate title from the Civil War

This is a very rare title from the Confederacy. According to Brigham only four institutions in the United States have any holdings of this title from the Civil War, most just a few scattered issues. The American Antiquarian Society has no issues recorded from this era.
The ftpg. contains several war related reports including items headed: "Brutality of the Enemy in Hyde County" "Departure of Drafted Men in Chains" "Conscripting Negroes"  "A Capital Speech" and a bit more, including: "Thanksgiving In The Army" which is signed in type by: R. E. Lee, General (see).
The inside pages have much on the Civil War as well, with items headed: "The News" "W.W. Holden, Esq., P.A. Wilson and Others" "From Charleston--Particulars of the Bombardment of Thursday--Damage to the Ironclads--Our Loss, etc." "The Draft--A Suggestions" and more.
Perhaps the best content in this issue is the lengthy page 3 "Address to the People of the Confederate States" which is signed in type: Jefferson Davis. (see for portions). This address takes about half of the page and is prefaced with an item headed: "The President's Address". Page 3 also has an ad headed: "Notice to Absent Soldiers"
Most of the back page is taken up with advertisements.
Complete in four pgs., light water stain in the upper right, two very small holes,  generally very nice condition.
