A quite rare title, perhaps the first we have offered? Page 5 has one of the more famous letters from Abraham Lincoln being his reply to Horace Greeley's editorial of August 20, "A Prayer of Twenty Millions" (see the hyperlink for this), which urged emancipation. Lincoln replies in his letter with his famous quote: "...My paramount object...is to save the Union, and it is not either to save or to destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave, I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves, I would do it...", signed in type: A. LINCOLN. The full text of the letter is seen in the photos. A significant document expressing Lincoln's views on slavery from the middle of the Civil War.
Page 4 has an editorial concerning this & Greeley's letters headed: 'President Lincoln's Letter" which mentions in part: "...We thank the President for this rebuke of the impudence and madness of Greeley and his Abolition associates...It knocks them on the head & all conservative & patriotic men should encourage & sustain Mr. Lincoln in this effort to make the preservation of the government the simple & distinct object of this war..." (see).
Eight pages, close-trimmed at the bottom of pages 3 & 4 shaves a few words in the mentioned editorial but causes no loss of readability (see).
