April 10, 1865

BOSTON DAILY JOURNAL, April 10, 1865

* General Robert E. Lee surrenders
* Battle of Appomattox Court House
* Lincoln's assassination a few days away

At first I thought this was a damaged issue, lacking the back leaf, but upon examination with a "regular" 4 page edition (see our item 639616) I find this issue was printed as such. This is a single sheet edition containing the front page of the regular edition, and on the reverse is text identical to page 4 of the regular edition. So essentially here is a sheet with pages 1 and 4, obviously printed as such as typically pg. 2 would be on the reverse of the front page.
The top of the back page has the report of Lee surrendering to Grant at Appomattox, with column heads including: "Gloria In Excelsis Deo!" "SURRENDER OF GEN. LEE AND HIS WHOLE ARMY!" "The Terms Of Surrender" "Correspondence Between Gens. Grand and Lee" "Official thanks to the Army" and more. Included is the dispatch: "General Lee surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia this afternoon upon the terms proposed by myself. The accompanying additional correspondence will show the conditions fully." signed in type: U.S. Grant, Lieut. General. This is followed by several dispatches signed by Grant and also R. E. Lee as they finalized the terms of surrender (see).
The front pg. is entirely taken up with advertisements.
A single sheet "broadsheet" edition, large folio size, some archival mends at the folds and the fold juncture, otherwise rather good.
