April 10, 1865

BOSTON DAILY JOURNAL, April 10, 1865

* General Robert E. Lee surrenders
* Battle of Appomattox Court House
* Lincoln's assassination a few days away

The top of the back page has the report of Lee surrendering to Grant at Appomattox, with column heads including: "Gloria In Excelsis Deo!" "SURRENDER OF GEN. LEE AND HIS WHOLE ARMY!" "The Terms Of Surrender" "Correspondence Between Gens. Grand and Lee" "Official thanks to the Army" and more. Included is the dispatch: "General Lee surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia this afternoon upon the terms proposed by myself. The accompanying additional correspondence will show the conditions fully." signed in type: U.S. Grant, Lieut. General. this is followed by several dispatches signed by Grant and also R. E. Lee as they finalized the terms of surrender (see).
This news was obviously just received as these surrender details are followed by military reports involving R.E. Lee prior to the surrender.
The top of page 2 also has some reports relating to Lee's surrender including: "Boston Joyful" "Rejoicing Over the Victorious Triumph" "Business Suspended" and more, and also a nice editorial headed: "Lee's Surrender!"
Four pages, large folio size, nice condition.
