During the early period of the federal government the capital was in New York City, but in the early 1790's if moved to a new temporary location in Philadelphia as the nation awaited the development of the future nation's capital at Washington, D.C.
Page 3 has an inconspicuous yet very significant report which formalizes this move. Note the item datelined "Philadelphia, May 28" which reports: "Yesterday morning the President of the United States left this city on his journey to the seat of Government at the city of Washington. The President was accompanied by his private secretary, Mr. Shaw; and we understand goes by way of Lancaster and Fredericktown..." (see). A perfect statement to find in a period newspaper noting the capital was moving to Washington, D.C.
Four pages, minor archival mend near the bottom of the back leaf, very nice condition.
