August 14, 1861

THE DAILY JOURNAL, Wilmington, North Carolina, Aug. 14, 1861

* Rare Confederate title
* re. Battle of  Bull Run

This is one of just a few newspapers which printed "Confederates States Of America" in the dateline (see photos).
The entire front page is taken up with advertisements. Page 2 has: "the News" "Who Is Gen. Rains?" "Attention Ladies!" "Speech of the Hon. J. C. Breckinridge in Baltimore" and other items. Perhaps the best article is "An Englishman at the Battlefield" which he visits just a few days after the Battle of Bull Run, and notes: "...we were in close proximity to the battle field--a fact, indeed, easily perceptible from the intolerable effluvia which greeted my nostrils...everything showed that a terrible conflict had lately taken place. Dead bodies of the enemy, too, lay about in all directions, the intense head of the sun rendering them intolerable to approach...I forcibly thought of what Gen. Beauregard observed to me in the morning: 'The Northern hordes came to invade our soil, but the portion I shall give each man will be six feet by two!'..." with much more, taking over a full column.
There is some war-related reporting on page 3 including one dated at Mobile, Aug. 13 (see), but most of the bkpg. is taken up with ads, including a "$180 Reward" for deserted soldiers (see photos).
Four pages, nice condition.
