July 13, 1804

NEW YORK HERALD, July 13, 1804

* Alexander Hamilton death
* Aaron Burr duel
* Early 1st report

All columns on pages 2 and 3 are black-bordered for the death of the celebrated Alexander Hamilton, killed in a duel with Aaron Burr on July 11. This is an early report as a page 2 item datelined "July 12" announces: "The universal anxiety which agitates all classes of people in this city for the fate of General Hamilton renders it proper that we should state that at the time of putting this paper to press he was alive..." with more. But then, a few inches below is a report reading: "We stop the press to announce the melancholy tidings that GENERAL HAMILTON IS DEAD!"
The next column under a July 13 dateline has: "With emotions that we have not a hand to inscribe, have we to announce the death of ALEXANDER HAMILTON. He was ruthlessly cut off in the 48th year of his age in the full vigor of his faculties and in the midst of all his usefulness..." with more. There is nice text on his final moments, prefaced with: "...be conductive to the advancement of the cause of Religion were I to give a narrative of some facts which have fallen under my own observation during the time which elapsed between the fatal duel and his departure out of this world...", the details following (see), including: "...I remained with him until 2 o'clock this afternoon, when death closed the awful scene--he expired without a struggle, and almost without a groan...".
Also inside are details on the: "Funeral Procession", taking most of a column.
This is the earliest report we have offered as others we've sold were dated July 14 and later. Great to have this report in a New York title, where he lived. And terrific also to have reports--within inches of one another--noting he is still alive, and then that he is dead.
Four pages, never-trimmed margins, archival repair at the page 1 spine and pg. 1 horizontal fold, some water staining & scattered foxing, minor fold wear.
