October 13, 1798

COLUMBIAN CENTINEL, Boston, Oct. 13, 1798  The front page has a letter from Maine: "To the President of the United States" concerning foreign encroachments on our land, which is followed by the: "Answer" signed in type: John Adams. Page 2 has a report of a  death: "At Norfolk, Virginia, Dr. William Read, 28 surgeon of the United States frigate Constitution, and a native of Roxbury. His interment was attended with every military, masonic and civic mark of respect. The officers of the Constitution have returned their thanks to the citizens of Norfolk for the attention paid to the remains of the deceased officers of that ship..." (see). Among the many pg. 3 ads is one beginning: "Deserted from the Untied States Brig Pickering..." with details (see).
