NEW YORK HERALD, May 10, 1869

* Completing the Transcontinental railroad
* Promontory Point - last spike

Page 7 has a report headed: "The Pacific Railroad" with subheads including: "Celebration of the Completion of the Road in California--A Gala Day in San Francisco and Sacramento--General Rejoicings & Jollification--Why the Roads Were Not Joined". This text takes about 7 column inches and includes much on the celebration and preparations for the driving in of the last spike, which was delayed in part because: "...several hundred men had seized a train at Piedmont, on which was President Durant, telling him they were hungry & must have their money & that they would detain him until it was forthcoming. The non-arrival of Mr. Durant is alleged to be the principal cause for postponing the ceremony of joining the roads until Monday next."
Page 5 has: "Across the Continent - On the Central Pacific Railroad--Its Construction and Prospects--Indians on the Route--A Miserable Set of Savages--Village of Elko--Off for White Pine" which is a great, early travelogue on the railroad taking 1 1/2 columns.
Twelve pages, archival mends at the folds & some margins, otherwise good condition.
