This is a very early issue (issue #48) of the oldest continually published newspaper in the world, having started just the previous year in 1665. And this is a pre "Great Fire" of London issue, which was reported in the issues of early September, 1666. The ftpg. is mostly taken up with various European reports, mostly with a military theme. The bkpg. is similar, although there is a report which takes over one-third of the 2nd column which begins: "At the sessions in the Old Bailey, John Rathbone an old Army Colonel, William Saunders, Henry Tucker, Thomas Flint, Thomas Evans, John Myles, Wil. Wescot & John Cole, formerly officers or soldiers in the late Rebellion, were indicted for conspiring the Death of His Majesty & the overthrow of the government..." with more (see), and ending with: "...The evidence against these persons was very full and clear, and they accordingly found guilty of High Treason."
A single sheet issue, 6 3/4 by 11 inches, great condition. A terrific example of not only an early issue of this famous title, but one from the year of both the Great Plague and the Great Fire of London.
