Item # 638699

April 08, 1935

THE NEW YORK TIMES, April 8, 1935

* Parliamentary elections
* Free City of Danzig
* Nazis & Adolph Hitler

The top of the front page has a two column headline: "NAZIS BALKED AT DANZIG, FALLING SHORT OF 2/3 VOTE; POLES PROTEST TERRORISM" with subheads. (see)  Lengthy text continues inside.
Other news, sports and advertisements of the day. Complete in 40 pages, this is the rare rag edition that was produced on very high quality newsprint, with a high percentage of cotton & linen content, allowing the issues to remain very white & sturdy into the present. Given the subscription cost, libraries & institutions rather than individuals were the primary subscribers of these high-quality editions. Minor spine wear, nice condition.

wikipedia notes: Parliamentary elections were held in the Free City of Danzig. Although the Nazis won 59% of the vote, this was short of the two-thirds majority needed to set up a dictatorship. A German Nazi and a Pole were shot during an outbreak of violence in Brentau.
