Inside has an interesting report concerning the site of the Naval Academy, which was formally created on Oct. 10, 1845, just two months after this report. The Annapolis Academy was preceded by the Philadelphia Naval Asylum School. The report in this issue (taken from a Phila. newspaper) mentions the value in staying away from the temptations of a large city (see Wikipedia for details), noting in part under: "The Naval School" "It is now, we believe, determined on by the department, to break up the naval school near this city, and to open one near the sea, where the students can be accommodated on shore a part of the year & have the advantage of sea exercise during the warm weather..." with the other consideration being: "...The immediate vicinity to a large city is always found sufficiently dangerous to the young student...is better to remove the pupils from the dangers of temptation than to attempt to deliver them from the evils with which their own imprudence...have lead them..." with a bit more.
Sixteen pages, 8 1/2 by 12 inches, great condition. Nice to have this notable report in a Baltimore newspaper.
