NILES' WEEKLY REGISTER, Baltimore, July 9, 1825 Inside has an early report on the Santa Fe Trail, headed: "New Mexico" which mentions in part: "...man belonging to an expedition fitted out for trading to Santa Fe, from St. Louis, in 1822, arrived here...left Santa Fe in August last & states that the trade of that country is lucrative & the inhabitants friendly to the Americans...Taos is the first town met with on the route from St. Louis to Santa Fe & contains 4 or 5000 inhabitants. It is 80 miles from Taos to Santa Fe...Santa Fe contains about 9000 inhabitants...there is a silver mine in its vicinity...100 miles further south is Albuquerque..." with more.
Sixteen pages, 6 1/4 by 9 3/4 inches, very nice condition.
This newspaper began in 1811 and was a prime source for national political news of the first half of the 19th century. As noted in Wikipedia, this title: "...(was) one of the most widely-circulated magazines in the United States...Devoted primarily to politics...considered an important source for the history of the period."
