April 13, 1793

NATIONAL GAZETTE, Philadelphia, April 13, 1793

* Mother Bethel A.M.E. Church cornerstone laid

Nearly half of the back page is taken up with the: "Last Will and Testament of Louis the XVI, written by Himself" and signed at its conclusion: Louis. This is followed by a report headed: "African Church" which notes: "...the Corner Stone of the African Church was laid in Fifth St., between Walnut and Spruce Streets, by four of the members of the church..." with more. This was the first African-American Episcopal church in the United States, as well as the first independent African Church in America.
The back page also has: "Guillotine" which begins: "The following is a description of the fatal machine by which the late king of France suffered..." with much descriptive  text (see).
Very uncommon title, four pages, bit of foxing, very nice condition.
