Wilmington was a major Atlantic Ocean port city for the Confederacy during the Civil War, and was one of the last ports to fall to Union forces in 1865. It ranked equal in size to Atlanta according to the 1860 census, and was a major point of entry for supplies for the entire Confederacy, exporting cotton & tobacco in exchange for munitions, clothing & food. As such it was barricaded by Union forces during the war, but blockade runners had some success in getting supplies through. It is just 170 miles north of Charleston, where the Civil War began.
Neighboring South Carolina was the first state to leave the union in Dec., 1860, and although North Carolina did not officially secede until after the bombing of Fort Sumter its political sympathies were strongly with the South ever since talk of secession began.
Page 2 has an item: "A Splendid Flag" which begins: "We saw this morning a splendid Confederate Flag...The dimensions are 28 by 18 feet, and it is strongly and beautifully made..." with more (see). Also: "A Contrast" and "Shelling Baltimore" plus an article headed: "General Lee" (see).
But perhaps the best item is the "Message Of President Davis" which is not his actual speech but rather a synopsis of his various points, including: "He announced the ratification of the permanent Constitution by all of the Confederate States...He says that the declaration of war against this Confederacy by Abraham Lincoln rendered it necessary to convene Congress in order to devise measures necessary for the defense of the country...He says that a people thus united & resolved cannot fail of final success...he congratulates the Confederacy on the patriotic devotion exhibited by the people of the Confederacy..." with more (see).
Also on page 2 are: "Lincoln's Government to be removed to Pittsburg--The Public Buildings to be Blown Up" "The New York Seventh" "Important Movement in Georgia" "Breadstuffs, Provisions for our Armies" "More War News ! " "A large Army to March Through the South taking North Carolina in its Route--Our Soil to be Invaded !! " and other smaller items.
Pages 3 & 4 are taken up with ads, some illustrated. Complete in 4 pages, some staining to the back leaf does not cause loss of readability, generally nice condition.
