PORTRAIT MONTHLY, New York, May, 1864* Civil War Generals
This was an off-shoot of the New York Illustrated News. Each month the Portrait Monthly featured woodcut engravings of the leading generals and politicians of the war, North and South, along with capsule biographies, news, stories, poetry, and serialized fiction, all pertaining to the war. The magazine only existed for 18 issues.
The ftpg. has a portrait of the Confederate "General Gustavus W. Smith" with his biography. Among the many portraits within are General James Wadsworth, General Cadwallader C. Washburne, Col. William Stoughton, General John Barnard, General William Hazen, Col. Robert Minty, General Earl Van Dorn among othes.
Sixteen pages, 9 1/4 by 11 1/2 inches, small binding holes at the blank spine margin, bit of foxing, good condition.
