THE LONDON GAZETTE, England, Feb. 11, 1683 

* Earliest of English language newspapers to be had

A front page item datelined "Madrid" reports: "The flota from New Spain [present-day Florida] which arrived at Cadiz...consisted of eight Sail...These ships have brought home a Million and Half Pieces of Eight for the King....We hear that the Governor of Vera Cruz, which place was plundered by the pyrates about April last, had by order of the viceroy of Mexico been tryed, and condemned to have his head cut off."
The back page as a report: "...a tryal was had...against Mr. Laurence Braddon and Mr. Hugh Speke...whereas the late Earl of Essex was committed to the Tower of London for high treason in conspiring the death of the King & the subversion of the government, and thereupon...cut his own throat..." with more on this (see).
Single sheet, 6 1/2 by 11 inches, very nice condition.
