A war-dated issue of New Jersey's first newspaper...

Item # 637478

May 10, 1780

THE NEW JERSEY GAZETTE, Trenton, May 10, 1780

* Rare 18th century American title
* Revolutionary War era

Titles from New Jersey are very uncommon, particularly from the 18th century. Of greater significance is that this was the very first newspaper in New Jersey, having begun just 2 years prior in 1778.
The front page is taken up with reports from Europe, including a little chart headed: "The present American war has cost the following sums above the peace establishment..." showing the figures for 1775 thru 1779. Page 2 has an item noting: "...it plainly appears that France is making the greatest preparations imaginable for an invasion of Britain early in the spring...". Another item includes: "Sometime before the enemy crossed Ashley river, Col. Washington with a party...came up with a light party of the enemy on which an engagement ensured, when our people took a Col. Hamilton of the North Carolina refugees, a Dr. Smith & seven privates...This action happened within 100 yards of their flying army...obliged Col. Washington to order a retreat...The day that the enemy approached the lines on Charleston neck Col. Laurens with a small party had a brush with the advance body of the enemy...reported to be from 12 to 16 killed..." with other items on skirmishes in the Carolinas.
Some war-related reports are on pg. 3 also, including: "...inform that Charlestown was not taken the 20th of April." A letter from Charleston has other war items, including a notes that: "...his Excellency General Washington has received a letter from the Marquis de la Fayette...of his arrival at Boston...".
Four pages, very nice condition. We rarely are able to offer any war-dated newspapers from New Jersey.
