Supporting "Abram" Lincoln for President...

Item # 637471

May 24, 1860

THE EVANSVILLE DAILY JOURNAL, Indiana, May 24, 1860

* Abraham Lincoln for President notice
* Pre Civil War era

The top of page 2 has a political ad headed: "People's Ticket" "For President, ABRAM LINCOLN of Illinois" "For Vice President, HANNIBAL HAMLIN of Maine" (see).
This is followed by a great editorial on the election & referencing those of the past, & including: "...Fillmore, it is reported, will support 'Old Abe Lincoln', his old Whig ally of 1840, '44, and '48..." and further on: "...and support 'honest old Abe' as the best & surest way to defeat the slave-code Administrationists...". This is followed by: "Fillmore Support Lincoln!" which includes: "The result is before the people. Abram Lincoln, of Illinois, is the standard Bearer...Where, then, lies the path of duty? Mr. Lincoln is nominated by a powerful party. His success is more than possible. It has strong probabilities in its favor...it is the plain duty of every old Whig & American who hopes to do anything for his country...to come up squarely to the flag and pledge to Abram Lincoln...".
It is fascinating that his notoriety was so limited at this point that many thought his first name was "Abram".
Four pages, nice condition.
