Once the capital of the Confederacy fell to the North in early April the Yankees also took over the press and continued printing newspapers. This is an early issue (#12) of this "union occupation" newspaper with page 4 coverage of Lincoln's assassination.
As noted in the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History website, the Whig was the first newspaper in the South to print the news of the assassination. Although this is not the first report, the front page first column heads read as though it could have been: "THE GREAT TRAGEDY!" "Additional Particulars Of The Murder" "The President's Last Moments" "Escape Of The Assassin!!" and more. The entire ftpg. is taken up with these reports.
Page 4 has a nice editorial on the assassination. Also: "Capture of Mobile" "Three Thousand Prisoners & Three Hundred Guns Taken" "The Rebel Garrison Retreat Up the River in Gunboats" and more.
Eight pages, rubbing at the folds with some minor perforation at folds & loss to a few words. Portions of the front page are lightly inked.
A significant issue from what was the Confederate capital less than three weeks prior.
