DAILY RICHMOND EXAMINER, Virginia, Aug. 24, 1863
* Anti Yankee editorial - cowards ?
* Rare Confederate title from the rebel capital
Not just a nice Confederate newspaper, but one from the capital of the Confederacy. The front page has much reporting on the Civil War including: "From General Lee's Army--Yankee Movement In The Valley" "The Richmond Post Office" "City Intelligence" "North Carolina & the War--The Voice of Her Soldiers" & other smaller heads.
The bkpg. has the always-interesting editorial, beginning: "The enemy have demanded the surrender of Sumter and Wagner, which they cannot take, with a menace of throwing shells among women & children who remain in the city of Charleston...The fact occasions so surprise in one point of views. It has long been known that Yankees are capable of any baseness, & that cowards will strike the coward's blow..." with much more (see for portions). Also on the bkpg. are: "From The Army in Virginia" "Our Privateers at Sea" "Still Later From The North" "From Mexico" "Telegraphic News--The Latest From Charleston--Operations Before Charleston--Furious attack on Fort Sumter--The Walls give Way Under the Terrific Fire--Threat to Shell Charleston--General Beauregard's Reply" and "Military Strength of the Confederate States".
Complete as a single sheet newspaper, scattered foxing, very nice condition.
