March 31, 1864

CHARLESTON DAILY COURIER, South Carolina, March 31, 1864  This was one of just a few newspapers from the Confederacy which actually printed: "Confederate States Of America" in the dateline (see). Certainly the dominant content on the front page is the very lengthy: "Gen. Johnston's Report" and  "The History of the Military Operations of the past year in Mississippi and East Louisiana" being Johnston's official account signed by him in type: J. E. Johnston, General. This report takes fully two-thirds of the front page And also on the front page are other war items: "From Dalton, Ga - Affairs in Front", "From Richmond - Affairs at the Capital", "From Orange Court House, Va - Enemy Scouting in the Direction of Fredericksburg - Expected Movement of Grant", "Siege of Charleston" & a few smaller items.
The back page has "Army Correspondence of the South Carolinian", "The Amount Funded", "Col. Wm. Parker White", "Mississippi News" & a bit more, but is mostly taken up with various advertisements.
Complete as a single sheet issue, a few small archival mends near margins, paper weakness near the top causes some small holes affecting some words but not loss of readability, generally in very nice condition. Complete in 4 pages, never bound nor trimmed, minor wear at the folds, generally very nice condition.
