August 24, 1889

LESLIE'S ILLUSTRATED, New York, Aug. 24, 1889

* Lifesaving at Coney Island Beach
* H. P. Cheatham, the only "colored" Rep. elected to the 51st Congress
* Frederick Douglass - minister to Haiti (text)

The full ftpg. showing the celebration of President Harrison on his visit to Lawrence, Mass. & Portland, Maine, with another print inside.
Certainly the most dramatic print is the double page centerfold: "SAVED ! Dangers Of Surf-Bathing On The Coast--A Scene At Coney Island" which shows a lifeguard rescuing a young both (very dramatic).
Other prints include a small portrait: "Hon. H. P. Cheatham, The Only Colored Representative Elected To the 51st Congress"; a full pg. with 7 scenes: "The Method Of Sending A Telegram--Scenes In The Main Office Of The Western Union Telegraph Company"; "Watermelon Season in New York City" & a brief bit of text concerning Frederick Douglass as Minister to Hayti (see).
Sixteen pages, the centerfold is tipped-in (desired), very nice condition.
