Death of Martha Washington... First American appearance of "Little Red Riding Hood"...

Item # 636906

June 5, 1802

THE PORT FOLIO, Philadelphia, June 5, 1802 Page 5 has a very notable report under the heading: "Obituary" reading: "DIED, at Mount Vernon, on Saturday evening, the 22nd ultimo, Mrs. Martha Washington, widow of the late illustrious general George Washington..." with a bit more. It is followed by the death report of Mrs. Sarah Jay, wife of John Jay.
Pages 5 & 6 contains the first American appearance of "Little Red Riding Hood, under the heading: "The Wolf King; or Little Red Riding Hood. An Old Woman's Tale". This version is reasonably more brutal than the Brothers Grimm version of 1812. It was first published in Tales of Terror in London, 1801.
Eight pages, 10 by 12 1/4 inches, great condition.
