October 05, 1924

NEW YORK TIMES, October 5, 1924

* Rogers Hornsby ends with .424 batting average
* St. Louis Cardinals - major league baseball MLB

The top of the ftpg. has coverage of the first game of the Major League Baseball World Series, noting; "Giants Defeat Senators In Opener..." with subheads noting: "President A Real Rooter" "Tosses Out First Ball..." and more (see). But of more significance is the sports page report noting: "Hornsby and Ruth Take Titles In Major League Batting Races" "Cardinals' Star Finishes Season With .4235, New Modern Record--Babe Leads Field With Mark of .379...".
In the history of Major League Baseball only 7 players have finished the year above 400. Roger Hornsby did it 3 times (1922, 1924, 1925), his 1925 achievement the last until Ted Williams did it in 1941. No one has done it in nearly 70 years.
The complete Sunday edition, quite thick with some 100+ pages. Usual browning with various small tears & chipping at the margins, disbound. Should be handled with care.
