February 19, 1789

THE DAILY ADVERTISER, New York, Feb. 19, 1789  Page 2 has a report from "Philadelphia" which reports: "A letter from Virginia says that 10 of the 12 electors of that state had meet and chosen, unanimously, General Washington, President. For Vice President the honourable John Adams had five votes, Governor Clinton three votes, the honourable Mr. Hancock one vote, and the honourable Mr. Jay one vote." Similarly, a report from Wilmington Delaware notes that state has cast: "...three votes for General Washington, as president, and three for the honorable John Jay, as vice president." (see)
