November 16, 1864

THE CRISIS, Columbus, Ohio, Nov. 16, 1864  On the front page are: "Death of Governor Medary" "Death of Col. Samuel Medary" and "Funeral of Governor Medary" with other items on his death on the ftpg. & inside. Medary was the publisher of this newspaper.
Actually Medary was indicted by a federal grand jury in 1864 for conspiracy against the government and was arrested. He was released on bonds, but died before he could be tried. This interesting title was described as "The Hottest Rebel Sheet to be found in the North or the South". It opposed the war and attracted the hatred of the Republicans and the Lincoln administration. It insisted that slavery could not be prohibited by law. So obnoxious was this paper to Unionists that it was denied circulation in some cities. In 1863 the press was raided by a hateful mob.
Other items inside include: "Guerrillas Not To Be Taken Alive" "The Mockery of Suffrage" "From Grant's Army, the Valley & Atlanta" & much more.

Eight pages, never bound or trimmed, minor foxing & minor margin wear, generally nice.
