NEW YORK TRIBUNE, March 1, 1864

* H. L. Hunley becomes the 1st successful submarine to have a torpedo attack on a warship in history

Although somewhat inconspicuously reports in the last column, the ftpg. has a report headed: "Naval Operations - The Loss of the Housatonic--Capture of Blockade Runners". This Housatonic was sunk by the Confederate submarine Hunley. The report notes in part: "...officers of the deck...discovered something in the water about 100 yards from the vessel, moving toward the ship. It had the appearance of a plank moving on the water & came directly toward the ship...".
The Hunley became renowned as the first submarine to successfully sink an enemy vessel in combat, and was the direct progenitor of what would eventually become international submarine warfare.
Also on the ftpg: "THE FLORIDA EXPEDITION" "The Repulse At Olustee" "Gallant Behavior Of Our Troops" "Retreat To Jacksonville" and more.
