November 28, 1864

THE DAILY PROGRESS, Raleigh, North Carolina, Nov. 28, 1864  Raleigh was one of the last major cities of the South to fall into the hands of Sherman, surrendering on April 13, 1865, just one day before Lincoln was assassinated. This rare Confederate title is from the latter months of the Civil War.
The front page has reports headed: "Legislative Proceedings" "City & State News" "Row Between an Irishman & a Congressman" "Death of Ex-Gov. Hammond"  "Attempted Escape of Yankee Prisoners" and various reports taking about half a column headed: "Later From the North" which includes various Civil War reports. Also on the ftpg. is an item headed: "Gen. Hood's Army".
The back page has much on the war, with ovar a full column headed: "Mr. Pool's Resolutions", plus: "From Georgia--Sherman's Movements--Preparations To Meet Him" which includes: "...Some little gloom & apprehension prevailed on yesterday morning, in consequence of sundry rumors to the effect that dispatches had been received in this city announcing the passage of the Oconee near Milledgeville by the enemy, who were likewise reported advancing in the direction of Augusta...The Yankee force that captured Millidgeville remained there up to yesterday evening. They had burned the State House..." with much more (see for portions).
Also on the bkpg: "Sentiment of the Army" has much interesting reading. Also included is a letter signed by the Confederate Secretary of State, prefaced with a nice signed in type by the President of the Confederacy: Jefferson Davis (see images). There is also much "Congressional" reporting from the Confederate Congress. There is also a brief note to the mayor of Augusta signed in type: Braxton Bragg, reading: "I leave here to day with reinforcements for Augusta. Exhort your people to be confident and resolute."
Complete as a single sheet newspaper which is typical for late-war issues from the South as most of the paper mills were in the North. Folio size and in great condition.
