April 03, 1841

THE LOG CABIN, New York, April 3, 1841

* William Henry Harrison near death
* Rare campaign title by Greeley

The famous campaign newspaper published by Horace Greeley in support of William Henry Harrison in the 1840 election, its success carrying over to many issues beyond the inauguration--including this one. Harrison's term was noted for its brevity, he surviving just one month in office before dying on April 4, one day after the date of this issue.
Of much significance is the inconspicuous yet very notable report on page 2: "President Harrison was taken suddenly ill on Saturday evening last, and for a time threatened with severe and protracted if not dangerous indisposition. (His disease is entitled by the doctors Pneumonia.) On Tuesday evening, however, the virulence of the disorder had been almost entirely subdued, and sanguine expectations were entertained of his speedy recover."
But it would not happen. Terrific to have this report in this Harrison newspaper!
Four pages, never bound nor trimmed, engraving of a log cabin in the masthead, minor foxing, nice condition.
