February 06, 1863

WESTERN SENTINEL, Winston, North Carolina, Feb. 6, 1863  This is a very rare title from the Confederacy. According to Brigham only four institutions in the United States have any holdings of this title from the Civil War, most just a few scattered issues. The American Antiquarian Society has no issues recorded from this era.
The ftpg. includes "Strange But True!" concerning the battle of Fredericksburg (see), and "Couldn't be Bribed" and "From Kentucky" (see).
Pg. 2 includes: "The News" which has several war-related reports; "Lieut John Stafford", "Northern Items" which also has a variety of war item, and "Gen. Jos. E. Johnston".
Over a full column on pg. 3 is headed: "Yankee Outrages in Eastern North Carolina", and also: "Gallant Feat at Charleston "The Price of Independence" "Tribute of Respect" and a notice headed: "Attention Conscripts & Deserters!" Another notice is headed: "Recruits Wanted!" plus there is: "A Proclamation" by the gov. of N. Carolina concerning those who deserted the Confederate army (see for portions). The bkpg. has: "Religious Reading For the Soldiers" but otherwise is mostly taken up with ads & notices including those headed: "Conscripts! To Arms! To Arms!!" and "Deserters - $120 Reward" among others. Complete in 4 pgs., damp staining to the upper right, otherwise in very nice condition.
An opportunity for not only a very rare Confederate title, but one with some fine content.
