Raleigh was one of the last major cities of the South to fall into the hands of Sherman, surrendering on April 13, 1865, just one day before Lincoln was assassinated. This rare Confederate title is from the latter weeks of the Civil War.
The front page includes: "The Local's Column" and an interesting item: "Thrilling Affair in Robeson County--A Lady uses a Repeater with Fearful Effect". Also: "The London Times On the War", and an item beginning: "The recent gleams of success do not however, console the Southerners for the loss of Savannah..." with more (see).
The back page has more war items including: "War News & Rumors Yesterday" "Wilmington" "Singleton and Hughes" "Home Guard Organization" "A Convention Demanded in Virginia "Letter From Gen. Sherman" is quite lengthy and fascinating as he responds to a letter concerning the results of war (see), signed in type: W. T. Sherman. Other war news as well.
Complete as a single sheet newspaper which is typical for late-war issues from the South as most of the paper mills were in the North. Folio size and in very nice condition.
