* A General Stonewall Jackson victory
Not only a nice Confederate newspaper, but one from the capital of the Confederacy. Among the front page items are: "Important Victory at Gordonsville" "North Carolina Election" "From Norfolk" "No Yankees In Hardy with most of the front page taken up with 36 Acts of the Confederate Congress, including; "An Act to Organize Battalions of Sharpshooters" "An Act to Punish Drunkenness in the Army" "An Act to Organize a Signal Corps" among so many others. There are also several "joint resolutions" including one: "...of Thanks for the Victory at Shiloh, Tenn." (see). A ftpg. ad begins: "Twenty-five slaves wanted...".
The bkpg. has war news and a note from the editor explaining a printing of "...a short paper [single sheet] and probably will have to do so for some time to come..." as much of the printing staff had been drafted into the war. Also on the bkpg: "The Campaign in Virginia--The Rebel Army & Its Movements..." "General Jerry Boyle--The Murderer--The founder of the Female Jail at Louisville" "Glorious News" which notes: "A battle was fought yesterday at southwestern Mountain resulting in a complete victory over the enemy. Stonewall Jackson repulsed Pope & drove him several miles..." (see). This was the battle of Cedar Mountain.
Complete as a single sheet newspaper, never bound nor trimmed, very nice condition.
