This issue was printed just 3 days before Cornwallis would surrender to Washington at Yorktown. The front page has a report concerning a naval engagement in the Caribbean involving Sir Samuel Hood. Page 2 has a report mentioning Cornwallis with: "Lord Cornwallis's last dispatches contain another melancholy proof of the inefficacy of this American war...Every commendation that is due to the bravery, the skill & activity of lord Cornwallis & Lord Rawdon carries within it the strongest proof of the superior number of American forces in that quarter...In what a situation should we have been in to stand against the force of general Greene, with less able officers than Lord Cornwallis..." with more (see). There are other war-related items on pg. 2 (see photos).
Page 3 also has war content, the most notable being three detailed letters written from camp near Yorktown, Virginia, dated October 1 and 5, which give reports which spell the beginning of the end for the British in that sector of the war. One letter begins: "On the 28th of September the whole army marched from Williamsburg & approached within two miles of the enemy at York--at which distance a sew was made of some opposition on our left..." and further on: "After a variety of fatigue & every other concomitant trouble, we are at last seated now before Mr. Cornwallis's lines The French army is operating on their right & the American army on their left...The enemy seem to be very passive...In six days from this date we will be (in all human probability) in their works..." with more. Terrific reading on events just prior to the historic surrender at Yorktown.
Four pages, this issue has been professionally restored with some archival overlays in areas which there was rubbing or minor loss, which does cause some loss of words in several reports (see photos). Otherwise in very nice condition.
