October 20, 1865

NEW YORK TRIBUNE, Oct. 20, 1865 The front page has column heads: "The List of Rebel Bondholders - More Denials - Progress of the Fenian Trial" & more. The ftpg. also has an interesting article beginning: "Another fact that reads American. A Miss Elizabeth Garrett has actually succeeded in obtaining admission, at least, to the outer circle of the medical profession...At present the surgical diploma & the degree of M.D. are denied to her sex..." with more (see).
Inside is a report "The Great West" "Fortunately for the Southern States, as Mr. DeBow remarks, and as we have frequently shown, the period has arrived in the settlement of our country when emigration is compelled by natural obstacles to turn back from further advance westward. Our Western settlements have reached the verge of the great interior dessert; they already trench upon sterile soil; they now occupy lands so distant from a market, that the farmer's products become next to valueless, through the expensiveness of transportation."  Another pg. 4 item: "Mr. Reagan & Suffrage" considered the allowing of former slaves to vote (see for portions). And a small item notes: "Seven regiments of Northern negro troops were mustered out of the service & disbanded at Brownsville, Texas...".
Eight pages, never bound nor trimmed, some damp staining, generally good.
