NEW YORK TIMES, May 2, 1932
* John Cockcroft & Ernest Walton
* 1st splitting of the atom - atomic nucleus
The top of the front page has a very historic report which notes the very beginning of the "atomic age" with one column heads; "ATOM TORN APART, YIELDING 60% MORE ENERGY THAN USED" "But Two British Scientists Succeed Only Once in Each 10,000,000 Bombarded" "Battered With Protons" "Hydrogen Atoms Are Thus Transmuted Into Helium--Conservation Theory Seen Upset" "A Tests Made For 3 Years" "Dr. J. D. Cockroft and Dr. E.T.S. Walton of Cavendish Laboratory, Cambridge, Explain Work". The article takes most of a column and continues on page 12 (see).
See the hyperlink which mentions Cockcroft and Walton as being the first to split the atom.
Other news, sports and advertisements of the day. Complete in 36 pages, light toning and a little wear at the margins, generally good.
