THE GENTLEMAN'S MAGAZINE, London, July, 1766 Articles include: "Papers Concerning the Spanish Trade in Jamaica" "Recipe Against the Black Fly & Bite of Gnats" "An Essay on the Management of Bees" "An Account of the Act....of Parliament for the better Preservation of Timber Trees..." "Observations of the Transit of Venus" and more.Over half of a page is taken up with the: "Speech of...Francis Barnard, Captain General & Governor...of the Massachusetts Bay in New England..." which begins: "I have great pleasure in being able to open this general court with congratulating you upon the repeal of the stamp act..." (see).
Near the back is the "Historical Chronicle" which has various news reports of the day which includes almost a full column headed: "American News" which begins: "On the first news of the repeal of the stamp act in New England, the bells were set at ringing at Boston, the ships in the harbour displayed their colours..." and more on the celebration. This report also includes a note from Philadelphia that: "...our gratitude for the repeal of the stamp act, each of us will, on the 4th of June next...dress ourselves in a new suit of the manufactures of England..." and more (see).
Present is one of the two plates called for, being a foldout print of: "A New Invented Stove Chimney" with several prints, folding out to measure 8 by 10 inches.
Complete as a 48 page issue, 5 1/4 by 8 1/4 inches, full title/contents page featuring an engraving of St. John's Gate. Very nice condition.
A nice issue of this very famous & successful British magazine from this significant year of the Stamp Act, and some ten years before the outbreak of the Revolutionary War.
