NILES' WEEKLY REGISTER, Baltimore,  December 27, 1817  Certainly the best report in this issue is headed "Of Galveston" which is concerning, among other items about Galveston, Texas,  the noted pirate Lafitte. Part of the text includes: "...Galvezton is a small island or sand bar situate in the bay of St. Barnard on the coast of Texas...Among the most conspicuous characters who happened to be then at Galveston were many of the notorious offenders against our laws...among whom the Lafittes may be classed foremost & most actively engaged in the Galvezton trade..." with more.
Sixteen pages, 6 1/4 by 9 3/4 inches and in very nice condition.

This small size newspaper began in 1811 and was a prime source for national political news of the first half of the 19th century. As noted in Wikipedia: "Niles edited and published the Weekly Register until 1836, making it into one of the most widely-circulated magazines in the United States and himself into one of the most influential journalists of his day. Devoted primarily to politics, Niles' Weekly Register is considered an important source for the history of the period."
