THE OBSERVATOR, London, April 27, 1709 This newspaper was published by John Tutchin, but the imprint on this issue notes: "LONDON, Printed for the use of the Widow of the late Author, John Tutchin."
Tutchin was a notable character in his time. He began The Observator in 1702, it being shrill in its denunciations of Queen Anne & her Tory ministries. In 1703 The newspaper was arraigned for scandalous libel on Parliament causing Tutchin to flee to France to escape being seized. He was found guilty but his conviction was overthrown on a technicality, but upon his return & continued railing against the Jacobites he was again arrested and died in 1707 of injuries from a beating in prison. His wife would continue the newspaper until 1712.
The newspaper was written in dialogue form where 'Observator' and 'Countryman' speak to one another. Single sheet, never bound nor trimmed, 8 1/4 by 134 inches, nice condition. Crane & Kaye notes that only two American institutions have this issue.
