January 14, 1863

DAILY RICHMOND EXAMINER, Virginia, January 14, 1863  Not only a nice Confederate newspaper, but one from the capital of the Confederacy. The ftpg. includes: "Narrow Escape of a Confederate Senator" "History of Tennessee" "The Courts" "City Intelligence" "Additional From the North" "Reception of Butler in New York--Protest of the Chamber of Commerce..." "From Our Army In The West" which comments on the battle of Murfreesboro (see), and a letter from the "Hqts. Richmond Defences, Jan. 12, 1863" (see).
The back page has most of a column taken up with the editorial, with much comment concerning Murfreesboro. Bits include: "The Campaign in East Tennessee has assumed a serious form...The cessation of hostilities in the East has enabled the Federal government to concentrate heavy forces in the West. The battle of Murfreesboro proves that they may succeed in their designs upon East Tennessee by mere dint of numbers...The enemy are determined to conquer this country if a heavy concentration of troops against it can effect the object..." with much more. There is also much reporting from: "The Confederate Congress" as well as "The Virginia Legislature".
Complete as a single sheet newspaper with a full banner masthead. Dirtiness to the top quadrant of the front page causes some difficulty in reading with the remainder of the issue having scattered foxing and generally in good condition.
