March 06, 1863

RICHMOND WEEKLY EXAMINER, Virginia, March 6, 1863

* Abraham Lincoln, dictator, coward ?
* Rare Confederate title from the rebel capital

This is one of only a few issues of the "Weekly" edition we have had.
The front page has much interesting content concerning the Civil War--from the Confederate perspective--with reports headed: "The Fight In The Valley" "The Vicksburg 'Cut Off" "The Naval Affair Off Charleston--Official Statement of The Blockading Officers" "The Reaction at the North" "Desertions in the Yankee Army" "Work of the Northern Congress" "From Murfreesboro". Also there are numerous subheads with related reports including: "Latest News From the North--Lincoln Invested With the Powers of Dictator by Congress--The Conscription Bill--The Latest  From Vicksburg and Charleston--Immense Advance in Gold" and more.
The article: "Long Live Abraham I ! " with subhead: "President Lincoln Temporary Dictator" is biting commentary on the powers given to Abraham Lincoln, citing a report in the Herald: "...the measures which have lately passed  Congress, & others which will become laws, will practically invest Lincoln with all the powers of a Dictator..." (see).
Also on the ftpg. is: "The Enemy Attack Fort M'Allister--Furious Bombardment--The Bombardment Still Going On" & "Desertions In The Yankee Army".
War reporting continues on the back page as well, beginning with a lengthy editorial on the current state of the war, with much criticism of Lincoln, beings including: "...If the Northern States regain their liberty in this generation they will do so by an appeal to army, which can be successful only because Lincoln is not Cromwell, not Napoleon...but a fool and a coward who has undertaken 'a job' for which he is incompetent..." (see) The editorial ends with: "...His hundred thousand tongues are well worth six trumpets scarlet; and his loud resounding voice sends over sea & shore the name of LINCOLN, DICTATOR! " (see for portions), plus "From Fredericksburg" and a subhead: "On the Slaughter of the  Irish Brigade at Fredericksburg".
Complete as a single sheet newspaper, close-trimmed at the left margin barely touches a few letters in the first column but causes no loss, but does shave the last letter or two of ads on the back page. Otherwise in nice condition.
