THE NEW YORK TIMES, May 20, 1948

* Judaica interest: creation of the Jewish state of Palestine

The front page has a 3 column headline: "ARABS GAIN IN JERUSALEM, BUT ISRAELI TROOPS REPORT BREAKING SIEGE IN OLD CITY" with subheads including: "Britain Leads Drive in U.N. To Beat U. S. Palestine Move" and more (see photos). This coverage carries over to pages 2 & where there is a nice map of Jerusalem, and photos of some ruins in the Arab-occupied Jewish settlement. A nice, early report on the creation of the Jewish state of Palestine, and great to have this coverage in the desirable New York Times.
Other news, sports and advertisements of the day. Complete in 60 pages, this is the rare rag edition that was produced on very high quality newsprint, with a high percentage of cotton & linen content, allowing the issues to remain very white & sturdy into the present. Given the subscription cost, libraries & institutions rather than individuals were the primary subscribers of these high-quality editions. Nice condition.
