January 10, 1861

THE WILMINGTON DAILY HERALD, North Carolina, Jan. 10 1861

* Start of the Civil War ?
* Pre Confederate title

Page 2 has a report headed in type much larger than normal: "STARTLING NEWS FROM CHARLESTON!" which reports the firing upon the ship Union supply ship Star of the West as it attempted to make a delivery to Fort Sumter. This incident was the first time shots were exchanged between the North & South but it did not trigger the Civil War. That would happen 3 months later. Nice to have this report in what would soon be a Confederate newspaper.
Also on page 2 is: "Synopsis of the President's Message" which relates to South Carolina seceding & other troubles in the South.
Four pages, two very discrete archival mends inside with an old mend at a lower corner of the ftpg., nice condition.
