October 06, 1862

CHARLESTON DAILY COURIER, South Carolina, Oct. 6, 1862

* Great Seal of the Confederate States of America

This was one of the few newspapers from the Confederacy which printed: "Confederate States of America" within its dateline (see). The front page has various war-related reports including a black-bordered account of the: "Death of Brig. Gen. Wm. Duncan Smith" with much details. Also: "The Condition of our Army" "From Tupelo, Miss." "Later From Florida" "Northern News--Naval Movements On Foot at Hilton Head" "Presentation at the Charleston Arsenal" and more.
Pages 2 & 3 are mostly taken up with ads but page 2 does have a very interesting item headed "The Confederate Seal" which begins: "Congress is debating the adoption of an appropriate Seal & Motto for the Confederate States...I recommend the adoption of the plough as our national emblem, and for these reasons:..." and what follows are ten reason. This is followed by suggestions for the Motto (see).
The back page has: "Our Dead Soldiers Buried on the Battle Field of Manassas" and "From the Army of Northern Virginia" and much on: "The Killing Of Bull Nelson" among other items.
Four pages, never bound nor trimmed, mild wear at the front page folds, generally in very nice condition.
