At the top of the first column on the front page are headlines reporting the surprise capture of Jefferson Davis, the former President of the defunct Confederate States of America. The reporting begins with an announcement from the Secretary of War, Edwin M. Stanton, which states: "The following dispatch, just received...announces the surprise and capture of Jefferson Davis, and his staff...", signed in type: Edwin M. Stanton. Hereafter is a dispatch from General Wilson beginning: "I have the honor to report at daylight of the 10th inst., Col. Pritchard, commanding the Fourth Michigan Cavalry, captured Jeff. Davis, and family....Col. Pritchard surprised their camp at Irwinsvilles, in Irwin County, Ga....", signed in type: J. H. Wilson. There is also an official report from Col.
