February 25, 1942

DAILY NEWS, Los Angeles, Feb. 25, 1942  Simply a fantastic report on what is known as the "Battle of Los Angeles". The front page has as quite large & dramatic headline: "GUNS FIRE IN L.A. BLACKOUT" with a smaller head noting: "Planes Threaten Harbor". The report begins: "The drumming of anti-aircraft fire early this morning woke thousands of residents of the Los Angeles area from swift descent of a blackout relieved only by searchlights stabbing for planes over the harbor area..."(see).
This event was a curious incident of World War II, the result of a rumored attack by the Japanese upon the coast of California. It was ultimately a false alarm attributed to a case of "war nerves" likely triggered by a lost weather balloon and exacerbated by stray flares and shell bursts from adjoining batteries.
Complete in 36 pages, tabloid-size, minor margin wear, generally nice condition. A nice issue for display.
